Stage 1 NREM
This is the lightest stage of sleep, where you begin to feel drowsy and your brain waves start to slow down. This stage usually lasts for about 5-10 minutes.
Stage 2 NREM
In this stage, your body temperature drops, and your heart rate slows down. You become more deeply relaxed and your brain waves become slower with occasional bursts of rapid brain activity.
Stage 3 NREM
This is also called slow-wave sleep or deep sleep. Your brain waves become even slower and your body becomes very relaxed. This is the stage where your body begins to repair and regenerate.
Stage 4 REM
This is the stage of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Your brain becomes more active and your eyes move rapidly. This is when most dreaming occurs, and your muscles become temporarily paralyzed to prevent you from acting out your dreams.
Stage 5 NREM
This is also called REM rebound, and it occurs after a period of REM sleep. It is characterized by a brief return to stage 2 NREM sleep, followed by another period of REM sleep. REM rebound is thought to be important for learning and memory consolidation.
